so, this may or may not make sense. you're the judge. this is just something i felt should be shared and was written after two am.
I think the animatrix is truly an amazing piece of art. It combines arguably two of the greatest things imaginable: japanese anime and playing with the idea of virtual reality versus reality. The suggestion that people prefer a virtual world is said allowed and quite true. I think the answer is the most basic: people are afraid of change and dying. They prefer everything to go smoothly and without cation, but the reality is, nothing can-hence, preferring a world where anything you imagine can happen, most likely one where everything you want is and no faults can occur. We, as a human race, prefer perfection and staying young. Why live in a place where we grow old and eventually die? People can understand what they see in movies, but throw in some animation and a degree of sexiness and they understand a whole lot more than a movie with actual beings. Why is this? Understandably, we compare ourselves to one another, always trying to outwit and outshine the other, thus beauty aids and clothing has become such a large part of humanity. Once the idea of animation is introduced, we can watch something without having to compare ourselves. We can finally watch something without wanting to be what we see or hear. We no longer have to devote hours upon hours of perfecting and taking lessons to better ourselves. In a virtual world, where we get to choose how we act, speak, look, we enjoy what we see, because we're everything we want to be. We can live freely, among all others, the same as reality, but oh so better. Admit it, you wouldn't mind living in a world where you look like the dream you and accomplish everything you desire. Now, a virtual reality looks a whole lot more promising that the real world where you have to actually work for something. I believe, in the end, something like a perfect virtual world will exist, be it machines doing our bidding while we perfect our flesh or being stuck in a machine while we live out something nonexistent. I myself, wouldn't mind going away for a while and create myself as I see fit, but i'd always come back, because in reality you can believe what's going on and the ideas of something just being there because we believe them to and want them there won't exist,
but in a perfect world, anything could exist. But, the animatrix also addresses the idea that we believe we're living in reality, but is, in fact, a world that can be shut down by the touch of a finger. I don't know what's scarier-”living” in a non existent world or facing everything reality is going to throw at you. They key is believe what you see. For the longest time, the phrase “seeing is believing” has applied to almost everything. Most use it without care, but strip that away and where does that leave us? Suddenly, if you believe it's real, but can't seem to see it in the real world, fear ways down on you. How can you be sure it's real? Maybe your mind created this as a means of trying to better your life? In this case, reality seems to be better, because you
know something is real, not a figment in a seemingly perfect, virtual world. We need this, to grasp at it, or succumb to a hellish world of second guessing and insanity.
